 This article based on progammers point of view:
Remember when PS is out for the first time? What make Sony PS become booming? IT'S the Game Developers! You see, when the era of Nintendo and Sega, alot of new Game Developers cant submit their game because of two reason: Nintendo and Sega is very picky, and lincense fee is too expensive. But when Sony enter enter the market, he need games ALOT, that's why rejected game/developers will go to Sony and of course Sony accept it open wide (ofcourse with quality control, but less picky XD).
HOWEVER:
Today is contrary of what happen in the past time. Sony start to behave just like old Nintendo and Sega! (While Nintendo start behave like old Sony now, I tell you what latter XD) They create hard to program console (PS3) and money consuming development which are unbearable by small developers.
LOOK AT THE FACT NOW:
Microsoft actualy using better strategy. YOU MIGHT NOT SEE IT because this strategy only visible for programmers or indie Developers.
While developing console game require money for license fee and other useless prerequisite (like developers must have their own office, SOHO not allowed, etc) for small people. Microsoft opening way for small developers, EVEN for a single programmer to create legit game!
XNA, is MIcrosoft game studio product (for free), designed to create PC and XBOX360 game, everyone have access to developing game for console. They can develop the game under PC, and if the need of XBOX360 port is arise, they just create new project setting for XBOX360 with the same source code from PC version.
IF YOU CAN'T SEE THE BIG PICTURE, here it this: In the future, there will be alot of programmer and small developers house will know how to program for XBOX360 and the next generation. YES, Microsoft spreading the net to embrace new potential progammer and developers by introducting them to their console techology.
Have you ever heard about XBOX360 homebrew? I mean, non- legit homebrew like NDS or PSP homebrew? NO? Why? Because today, homebrew is legit for XBOX360 by using XNA Game Studio XD
While developing games for PS3 require money and risky, Microsoft just play simple: "IF the curent big developers still arguing about titles and the market prospect in their own management, MGS just browsing all submitted homebrew game and if they found interesting they will more likely said "Dude, i wanna take your game into official console release, how about that?" Or "dude, you got nice idea, I tell you what, well give you support..."
When it comes to consoles today, everything not about AAA quality killer games, but AAA quantity killer number of games! I mean, mostly today games are in good quality less crap (in term of 2D/3D graphic and gameplay), when you see someone said crap, but not everyone agreed.
Another example, when you heard about A console with godly graphic quality and B console with regular graphic and gameplay. And when you heard if A console's game titles still can counted by your finger, and B console's game titles got alot of games and variation (even all ifnger of your family member are not enough to be used for counting XD). Which one did you choose?
Me, personaly, I choose B console with alot of game titles. Why? Because I feel more secure, and I believe, even B console still lack of AAA quality killer game but it does have it and it will available more, and while I'm waiting, I can play other games for killing time. And it might interesting.
THIS IS what Microsoft after, securing the future game titles by opening the door to the indie developers.
Marble Blast is one of example how indie game is released official for XBOX360. Is my 2 cents educative or what? XD
As for Nintendo it self, Nintendo also opening the door for Wii development, specially for new small developers (not single or group of developers), but the prerequisite still kinda stricted, but again, Nintendo already opening the door.
