Yes, it will look like sardine fish but I think it's still possible to do so.

If want classy look, then just place one only.

Saw someone posted this in FB which I find it very creative.

He took out both the sides glass of the detolf and combined it.

But that got me thinking, without both sides, is the detolf still stable?

It's only supported by the back glass and also the front glass, which is suppose to be the door.

Really risky if he did that. I dare not do that if I were him. :?

He should have "hacked" it, as IKEA fans like to call it. He could buy a single piece of wood from a hardware store, measure it to accommodate the three shelves and use it as a singular top/roof for the 3 combined shelves. This way the weight of the middle shelf's top/roof is distributed to the two shelves on the sides.

Initially I've many questions to ask you on the method you mentioned but after throughly thinking about it, I think I understand what you meant.

I drew a simple sketch (pls pardon my ugly drawing as I drew it free-handed on MS Paint  )

Image

The drawing is based on your method (if I understand you correctly).

As you can see, the gray lines on the sides represent the 2 side glasses.

Those thin black lines represent the metal frames that holds the glass pieces that holds the figures.

Now that the 2 side glasses are stripped off from the middle shelf, can the metal frame still sustain the weight of its figures?

It should work fine. I have a DETOLF in my room, and the frame is solid metal/aluminum. As long as the bottom and top pieces are a single piece to distribute the weight to the side shelves and you don't move it around too much, it should stay in one piece well enough.

I see, so far I only have 2 Detolf, maybe can try next time but the 2 glass removed don't know put where after that.

And I remember it's damn heavy!

LOL! Yeah, it's very heavy! That's the thing with IKEA furniture; everything is made of either glass or MDF, making them very heavy.

Dunno how I'm going to move this when I buy my own house in the future...actually, most of the furniture in my room is IKEA :?

I think most of the collectors will sure have one Detolf cabinet.

Or Billy bookcase. Both also from IKEA.
